From the beginning, the church was described as a community devoted to the preaching of God’s Word (Acts 2:42). More than just mere instruction, the people of God have always depended on the preaching of the Word as revelation, inspiration, wisdom, encouragement, comfort, correction, equipping, divine encounter, and supernatural power. For God’s Word is living and active (Heb 4:12); full of the power and presence of God (2 Tim 3:16). Jesus therefore preached the Word; the apostles followed in his footsteps and preached; and pastors are likewise commanded to preach this Word “in season and out of season” (2 Tim 4:2). It’s certainly important to study God’s word on our own, but there is unique power when we gather together and devote ourselves to the preaching and hearing of God’s word.
